Interesting information on our school building Molly Graves Girlling found:
Built by an Englishman, George Alexander Kerr, a chemical engineer who was Vice President of the Heald Co, the world’s largest tanning extract plant in the late 1800-early 1900's.
Construction on the house began in 1909 and was completed 1912. It Is in the Tudor Style and based on the style of Mr. Kerr’s home in England. Per "Lynchburg, An Architectural History” by Allen Chambers, “The Kerr House is the first Lynchburg house of the early 20th century whose design is based entirely on a revival style other than the Georgian. All of its details are conscious evocations of English Tudor architecture.”
The house had a succession of owners before being purchased by the Sims' in the 1940’s. | ||
