Don Martin, a former administrator in the Lynchburg City School system, was named headmaster in 1994. In 1994, the class of 1974 had an impromptu “reunion” at the school and Mr. Martin addressed our group. In his remarks he was very candid about the financial difficulties the school had been facing: Enrollment was down, donations had fallen off, and the school was finding it difficult to keep up with costly repairs to the facility as well as pay the salaries needed to attract and retain good teachers. Mr. Martin said he voluntarily had not drawn a salary to help with the cash flow situation. This reunion was a bittersweet get together – we were happy to see each other but disheartened by the deteriorating facilities and the financial problems that seemed insurmountable. | ||
